The vehicles for the 2026 season are expected to be smaller, nimbler and more environmentally friendly relative to present-day cars.

F1 has introduced the new language that will be used to describe the intricate details of its revolutionary 2026 technical rules.

The championship is embarking on what is considered the biggest rules overhaul in its competitive history starting in 2026, featuring revised car and engine specifications and the compulsory introduction of 100% sustainable fuels.

The new power units, which maintain the hybrid V6 layout, boast a substantially higher battery power, necessitating significant developments in the cars' aerodynamics.

Over a race distance, drivers will strategically manage battery power – sometimes even flying laps – to achieve the best result.

Broad surveys were conducted with a wide range of fans, including long-time followers and newcomers, to determine which terminology would aid comprehension of the key features of the 2026 changes.

The key objective was to make a range of advanced technical aspects of the competition as easy to grasp as possible for the widest audience.

Consequently, previous placeholder terms for certain devices – such as "modes labelled X and Z" for the adjustable aero – have been phased out in favor of descriptive names that succinctly convey the actual function of the innovation.

Exploring the New Tech

The FIA states that drivers will have increased agency to make decisions regarding power usage, energy recovery, and efficiency.

The upcoming changes mandate a set of functions that will be visually displayed on broadcast screens to aid the audience's understanding of the race battle.

  • Attack Mode: This takes over from the existing Drag Reduction System. It provides a burst of extra electrical energy available when a competitor is within one second the car ahead to execute an overtaking maneuver.
  • Extra Push Mode: This is a on-demand battery discharge from the energy recovery system that can be utilized during overtaking or defending. It provides the driver peak output at the push of a button.

Both of these key functions will have to be managed carefully, as the available electrical charge is capped.

  • Active Aerodynamics: Both the car's wings move automatically – flattening on the straights for reduced drag and increased velocity, and sealing in the corners for peak grip.
  • Energy Harvesting: The system can recharge the energy store with power recovered from braking, or during partial power application at the conclusion of a straight or in certain corners where only partial power is used.

2026 Car Specifications

The next-generation machines will be more compact and lighter than this year, with a car length cut by 200mm to 3,400mm, overall width narrowed by 100mm – down to 1,900mm – and the minimum weight reduced by 30kg.

Overall downforce is projected to decrease by approximately fifteen to thirty percent, although squads will naturally regain performance as they optimize their packages.

Aerodynamic drag has been slashed by 40%. The cars will employ adjustable aero systems – both wings will adjust on the straights to improve speed and boost top speed and click back into place for maximum cornering performance.

Tyres will continue to use the current rim size, but the tyres themselves will be narrower, by 25mm at the front and three centimetres on the rear.

Power Unit Revolution

The revised hybrid units will have an roughly half-and-half distribution in energy output by the ICE and the ERS, up from about 20% battery contribution this year.

The energy recovery system is made less complex through the removal of the MGU-H, the complicated and costly component that recovered energy from the turbocharger.

All vehicles will be mandated to operate on 100% sustainable fuel, created from plant-based materials or synthetic industrial processes.
