The Generosity of Unknown Individuals: The Way a Gentleman I Only Just Encountered Helped Me Secure the Role That Changed My Life

In the final years of the 1980s, I set out on a backpacking trip to the European continent with a travel partner. Since my friend was considering enrolling in graduate studies in NYC, we had arranged a fortnight visit there en route to London.

We arrived at the postgrad residence, a sizeable multi-story edifice on the UWS called International House. After dropping our bags, we made our way to the dining hall, where we picked up meals, found a table, and engaged in conversation with people eating there.

Adjacent to my seat was an Iraqi man enrolled in an engineering program at Columbia University. He asked me what I my profession was, and I explained that I had just graduated with a scientific background and had been performing experiments with electron microscopy.

He noted that there was an electron microscope unit at the university – close to the engineering faculty, which was why he was aware of it. He proposed that I consider applying for a job with them. I laughed it off, telling him that I was heading off to Europe and, more critically, I did not possess a US visa.

The following day I toured the city, coming back to the dining hall that night. The Iraqi student walked over to me and informed me that he had arranged an interview for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Given that he had gone to the trouble, I showed up for the discussion – but immediately informed my prospective employer that I was without a work permit, so I was unable to accept the role.

As is common in NYC – a metropolis where opportunities abound – she responded: “That can be arranged. How soon can you begin?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I was employed there for 36 months. A perk of the job was that I got no-cost classes at Columbia, and I used the opportunity to earn a master’s of international affairs.

I lost touch with him and I am unaware of his name, but his selfless gesture altered my destiny in multiple respects. I would never have had the courage or self-assurance to approach someone at an prestigious college and ask for a job. And, I had consistently hoped to pursue education overseas, but could never have afforded it without that tuition waiver.

What's more, that role at the university resulted in a job in Zurich where I met my beautiful French husband, with whom I currently share four amazing children. That encounter altered everything. That kind stranger changed my trajectory in life, and I’m always appreciative.
