Ahead of marking his six-year milestone as manager, Mikel Arteta has admitted that his future at Arsenal is inextricably linked to achieving success.

Reflecting on: From Appointment to Present

The Spanish coach assumed control on the 20th of December in 2019 and managed to steer the team to an cup win a short time later. Yet, that initial silverware stands as his sole significant piece of silverware since succeeding Unai Emery.

“Yes,” the manager said in response to a query about staying beyond 2027. “But it’s about today. And numerous factors must occur in the next few months as well to warrant that continuation.”

This weekend sees the anniversary with a fixture against Everton, the very same club Arsenal faced the day after his hiring was confirmed.

League Position and Pressure

Given that trailing Manchester City taking on West Ham earlier in the day, Arsenal face being knocked off the summit in the Premier League before their own match begins. This comes even with Arteta presiding over a squad that has endured more than a century of fitness issues from the beginning of last season.

Arteta is tied down by a year and a half left on the contract he inked in 2024, yet understands fully that success is required promptly.

The Manager's Mandate

Arteta elaborated, highlighting the ongoing need to justify his role. “I think a manager must deserve the right to be here tomorrow. And that is determined by how you react, how you communicate, how you enter the dressing room, the message you convey.”

He stated further, commending the unwavering support from the board and owners, but pinpointing the players' commitment as most crucial. “In the final analysis, the critical component are those players... For six years, I’ve seen just players with a standard of focus, willingness to improve and dedicate themselves to the team.”

Injury Concerns

The team approaches the upcoming game coping with yet another injury. Defender Ben White has been sidelined with a hamstring injury that is anticipated to see him miss action for the coming weeks.

Confidence in the Path

Even with the availability issues and the intense pressure, Arteta believes the club's “focus and dialogue” are profoundly distinct from when he first arrived.

He pointed to the team's performances as a sign they are nearing their goal. “Consider the performances, all the records that we... were breaking... We still haven't been able to do that [win trophies]. But that indicates the level we are at.”

Arteta concluded, “This is a standard that the Premier League has not witnessed in the past. And our aim is to achieve greater objectives. And if we do that, I think we are on the proper course to winning.”
